A Personal Introduction

In 1980, I found myself in the small town of Stanford, Montana.  Stanford, the county seat of Judith Basin County, had fewer than 600 people at the time, yet the grandest building in town was the County Courthouse.  That started me on a thirty-year trek to photograph every county courthouse in the state of Montana—a project I was able to finish only after I retired and started using digital cameras. The photo here comes from a trip to capture the Courthouse of San Juan County, Washington.  That courthouse is in the town of Friday Harbor.

By 2010, my coffee table book profiling Montana’s fifty-six counties was done, and I turned my eyes westward—to Idaho and then to Washington.  Washington is the smallest state by area in the western U.S. but is second largest in population.  Its thirty-nine counties called to me, and I was able to photograph most of them within six years.  One county eluded me.

The Sales Pitch, Of Course

The photograph is available from my Etsy Shop, LightIntoArt, in a wide variety of sizes and formats. Choose glossy photo paper prints in three sizes: 8×10, 11×14, 16×20. Or if you prefer something larger, choose canvas prints in 16×20, 24×36, or 30×40 inches. Finally, for a spectacular display, you can get this image in 3 panel side-by-side canvas prints at 24 x 72, 36 x 72, or 40 x 90 inches. The video below gives you an idea of what these sizes are like in a living room, bed room or office setting.

San Juan County

San Juan County is a group of several hundred islands at the northern end of Puget Sound.  No road connects the county to the rest of Washington State.  To visit, you must either have your own boat, take a plane, or ride the Washington State Ferries from Anacortes.  In October, 2021, I did just that.  The photo here shows Friday Harbor, San Juan County’s seat, from the water as the ferry comes in to land. To read more about San Juan County, here is the blog I posted about the county.

On this trip, we were able to visit two of the four main islands of San Juan County:  San Juan and Orcas.  The video below shows scenes we found as we drove around San Juan Island, the second largest in the archipelago.  These include farmland, the harbor at Roche Harbor, the Lime Kiln Lighthouse, a fox near the southern tip of the island, and a view of the water as we departed.  As always, if any of these images interest you as wall art, just say so in your comment.  I’ll make it so!
